Michael Comfort’s struggle continues at a level where playing time with the Los Angeles could be a bit of a hit.
Conforto didn’t start compared to the game on Wednesday and the Padres. In 2019, he is currently hitting .168, but only four home runs.
Baseball Savant’s Deep Dive dives into comfort numbers. It tells the story of a player who is currently struggling to square the ball. His defensive metrics are some of the worst in the sport, and the only things he does well (beyond the league average) are his walking rate and bat speed.

Bill Shaykin’s Los Angeles Times I talked to Andrew Friedman about a few topics. One of the more prominent revolved around the struggle of comfort. Friedman was not shy about offering his thoughts on where the team stands with the left-handed outfielder.
“Until now, obviously Michael hasn’t done what he had expected or what we had expected,” Friedman said. “But I bet that the next two months are far better than his past two months, seeing how he works, seeing progress in sight.
“Obviously, like all players, we continue to assess where they are. The important thing is, if there are injuries or (bad) performances, do you feel like we have different ways to pilot them?”
Speaking of within-group versatility, this subject is closely related to Hai-sung Kim. This year’s Kim’s numbers, coupled with the dynamic nature he plays, have many people hoping for him to become a daily player.
Even if it’s not on the card yet, manager Dave Roberts believes Kim will likely continue to get his chance at the expense of comfort.
When it comes to potential deals with other outfielders, Friedman didn’t rule that out. But he said, “But we have a very high bar and I think it’s very unlikely.” This talks about Kim, Dalton Rushing, Kike Hernandez and Tommy Edman’s versatility positions, as well as the quality personnel that could theoretically be raised from minors.
