Arsenal continued their perfect start to the Champions League with a sensational second half to secure a 4-0 victory over Spanish giants Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium.
After a shaky first half, Arsenal unleashed 13 minutes of attack, scoring four goals. The return of striker Victor Goqueres was key to the big win against Diego Simeone’s stubborn side.
Victor Gokeres shines with a perfect performance for Arsenal
Goqueres was praised as one of Europe’s most in-form strikers last season, with a clinical and complete performance as a centre-forward against Atlético Madrid.
The Swedish forward was absolutely perfect in possession, completing all nine passes (with 100% accuracy) and showing incredible efficiency, taking three shots in front of goal, all of them on target, two of which went into the back of the net.
Gökeres was not only amazing in terms of goals, but also in his work rate.
He won five of his seven ground battles, made three clearances and also contributed defensively with two recoveries and a successful tackle.
This was perhaps his best performance in an Arsenal shirt since signing for the Gunners in the summer.
Arsenal’s amazing run continues
The comprehensive victory against Europe’s biggest rivals further cemented Arsenal’s status as genuine title contenders this season.
Goals from Gabriel Magalhães and Gabriel Martinelli laid the foundation for a resounding victory, but it was the team’s defensive structure that really impressed.
The clean sheet against Atletico means the Gunners have yet to concede just three goals in their last 12 games across all competitions, an impressive record for the Premier League leaders.
Their secret weapon has been their set-pieces, commanded by Declan Rice, which, combined with a solid defense, have made them a formidable force on the domestic and European stage.
If they continue to play like they are, this could very well finally be their year.
