Aakash Chopra, a former Indian cricketer and reciprocal caretaker, recently shared his thoughts on the current leadership setup in India. He questioned whether having three different captains in each format would be the best approach for India ahead of the upcoming Asian Cup 2025.
Currently Shubman Gill is India’s test captain, and Rohit Sharma remains the captain of ODI after retiring from the test and T20I format, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the T20I team.
The former batter pointed out that the current three-way split might not be ideal, suggesting that the BCCI and the national selector would consider reducing it to two captains.

Aakash Chopra raises doubts on the three-captain formula ahead of the 2025 Asian Cup
There are rumours that Shubman Gill will be nominated as vice captain of the T20IS. In other words, Akyar Patel has lost his position and Chopra feels that it will be difficult for India to change in the future.
Chopra believes having two captains is the best option, as three different leaders can become unnecessary complicated due to the team’s long-term planning.

Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel, “Shubman Gill from Test Match, Rohit Sharma from ODIS, and Suryakumar Yadav from T20IS – three formats and three captains.
The commentator said, “There may be seduction. There are rumors. If that happens, will Shubman Gill be his vice captain instead of axar for continuity?
Aakash Chopra warns about the chaos in Indian cricket
Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra also questioned whether the current three-captain approach is injuring the consistency of the team. He said the captain will play a direct and important role on the field and make quick and instinctive calls. That’s why leadership stability is so important.
Many teams prefer one captain for red ball cricket and white ball formats, but Indian cricket always favors one captain policy. However, Rohit Sharma’s retirement and testing from the T20I have hindered that consistency.
So the blue man now has separate captains for Test, ODI and T20I, and as cricket analysts felt, it can be complicated for players.

Chopra adds, “I can still understand two captains. But it complicates a few things because three captains overlap in three formats, and somewhere else and so on in three formats.”
Aakash Chopra says switching captains can confuse victory formula
Commentators emphasized that the team is constantly adapting to new strategies and ideas for switching between captains, which could cause confusion and dilute plans for the entire game.
He said, “If you’re looking, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are playing Tests and ODI, while Jasplit Bumra and Mohammed Siraj are playing all three formats. If suddenly, if the player overlaps and the captain changes every time, leading to dilution, in line with another thought process.”
