The Emiliano Martinez location at Aston Villa is not calm. There are new reports suggesting that the Argentine goalkeeper may be open to a move after the summer frustration and renewed interest from Manchester United.
The Argentine goalkeeper was chased by United during the summer transfer period, but his move to Old Trafford ultimately didn’t come to fruition.
Martinez is widely expected to leave the villa after appearing to say goodbye to his supporters at the end of last season, and that speculation took place through the transfer window without resolution.
Villa eventually kept him on the team, and Emery reintegrates Martinez into the plan for the first team, but insiders warn that the goalkeeper’s long-term future will remain vulnerable if the outcome or relationship is sour.
Emi Martinez flipped over to leave Aston Villa
Football insider Peter O’Rourke discussed the future of the Villa goalkeeper and what the future will be for him.
He said:
“If Mann United is in the market for new goalkeepers and experienced goalkeepers, there isn’t much better than Martinez.
“Obviously there have been a lot of stories about him planning to leave the villa in the summer, and United were the main club that showed interest in him.
“They tried to lend him out, but that was never agreed by Aston Villa. There was clearly an interest in Martinez moving to Old Trafford as well.
“Of course, Martinez and United brought Senne Lammens in and the windows were closed, but as he’s a long-term goalkeeper, if you’re looking for an experienced option, obviously Martinez will check out a bunch of boxes for them.
“His long-term future at Aston Villa is still in the air, taking into account everything that happened in the summer. I’m sure he’ll want to move.
“It’ll be difficult to make a deal in January, but if they still need a new goalkeeper next summer, that might be something they’ll see again.”
Villa has no plans to let the goalkeeper leave
Villa boss Unai Emery has repeatedly shown that he doesn’t want Martinez to leave and cherishes the goalkeeper as part of his plan.
Trades in January will be difficult. The villa didn’t want Martinez to go in the summer. Negotiating a midseason transfer for the first team goalkeeper was not logical on their part.
When long-term squad planning is at the centre, but questions remain, would a window of likely clear solutions want to sign goalkeepers in the summer?
If Runmen is impressed this season, it’s hard to see the Red Devils consider a new goalkeeper move when other positions need immediate attention.
