Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. — Billy Horschel dropped an 18-foot birdie putt down the slope and Patrick Cantray clinched the match with another clutch tip as Atlanta Drive won his first TGL title with a 4-3 win in New York on Tuesday night.
Atlanta won both matches in three TGL finals that concluded the first season of the high-tech indoor league at Sophie Center.
New York led the entire game, 3-2 on hole 14, with Horschel delivering the biggest shot of the night. Atlanta throws the “hammer” challenge that New York accepted, and corresponds to two points in the penultimate hole. Ricky Fowler was in the bunker.
Fowler splattered four feet. Hoskell faced a putt on a sharp ridge that broke two ways, then went back to the left and back to the cup, when Hoskell ran out of the green, threw his putter and hat and screamed.
“Two feet away, I knew it was in the hole, so I made it black,” Horchel said.
New York threw a hammer challenge into the final hole, worth two points. Cameron Young and Cantray each missed the green on the par 5. Cantrey’s pitch from 60 feet checked up and stopped through the hole. Young had to make to force another match, and his pitch slid slightly by the hole.
Atlanta Drive won $9 million between Horschel, Cantrey, Justin Thomas and Lucas Glover, who were inactive in the three-man match.
New York received $4.5 million from Young, Fowler, Xander Schaufele and Matt Fitzpatrick.
