Dallas Mavericks Guard Brandon Williams found an elite mentor at Kyrie Irving.
The offensive burden fell heavily on Kyrie Irving’s shoulders after the Dallas Mavericks shockingly traded Lukadon Sic mid-season.
Given that Irving just turned 33, it’s no surprise that his body collapsed under the increased workload. As a result, Kai suffered a season-ending ACL damage.
Irving can’t play for quite some time, but the 2016 NBA champions appear to be coaching the team’s younger security guards.
Despite some ups and downs during the process, the Mavs still have shots in reaching the NBA playoffs as they scored a spot in the play-in tournament.
With Irving’s absence, many doubted which player would become the franchise’s main point guard. Well, I feel like Mavs wants Brandon Williams to do that role.
Williams recently signed a permanent contract with the organization and qualified for the Mavericks’ playoff push. Williams revealed he spoke with Irving before the match at a post-match meeting for the Mavericks’ recent victory over the Toronto Raptors.
“I actually called him right before the game. There was nothing related to basketball. I needed some beats.
“But it was all good. I’ll literally call Kai about anything,” Williams said.
He added: “Whatever I need, whatever I want to learn, the office is right there. Kylie is one call… I admire Kylie.”
The 25-year-old security guard missed several games due to a hip injury. However, Williams was declared suitable for the Raptors contest.
Despite coming out of the bench, Williams finished the night with 17 points, one rebound and three assists in just 22 minutes of playing time.
Williams’ season count improved to 8.6 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, following the Raptors game.
If he can stay healthy and continue to work hard under Irving’s guidance, it would not be surprising if he became an important member of MAVS in the future.
