Owen Farrell will join the Australian British and Ireland Lions squad in place of the injured Elliot Daly, confirmed by manager Andy Farrell on Thursday.
Britishman Farrell will be in camp after Daly suffered an arm injury in Wednesday’s 52-12 victory at Queensland Reds in Brisbane. He was sent for an X-ray after the match.
Farrell will join the Sydney team on Friday evening ahead of his match against New South Wales’ Waratah on Saturday, replacing his side in place of club and country teammate Daly.
“It’s heartbreaking for the group to have the Elliott tour over,” said Andy Farrell.
“He is a Lions legend and has added many to the group on and off the field during the past few weeks and three tours. Owen is now joining our options and bringing his own Lions experience to the group.”
Farrell, 33, won 112 caps in his country and made 18 appearances for the Lions in 2013, 2017 and 2021 at Sayer.
Farrell last played for England at France’s 2023 World Cup before confirming he would leave international rugby for personal reasons.
He then joined France’s side race 92. This eliminated him from playing in his country.
The move did not disqualify him for the Lions Tour, but he was removed from the first team by coach and father in May – Andy Farrell.
In June it was announced that he would return to the British and clubside Saracen after a season in France, and Farrell confirmed that he had not retired from international rugby and would not rule out playing for England again. His return to the International Arena was quickly tracked on a call to the Lions against Australia in the first match of three Test matches on July 19th.
