All the stories that this is the controversial British & Ireland Lions squad, ultimately polarizing or triggering Vitriol, and Andy Farrell parked sentimentality and went with his gut.
This is a group that focuses on here, now has no idea about the future or past and is fixed in the form.
From the Lions’ perspective, they are inexperienced. Of the 38 selected players, 26 are first-time tourists. Henry Pollock was only 16 years old when the Lions last toured.
But, among the names that are expected to be familiar, there is a reason to be excited by the promises within this group.

The final Lions selection meeting began Wednesday at 8am. Farrell spent an hour on his schedule and was hoping it would simply complete what was already agreed upon. The meeting continued until 3pm.
Real bolter
The Lions Tour has a history of the famous Bolters. These players appear as surprise choices in the final pain of the team selection. This year, there is no doubt Pollock, the 20-year-old Northampton Saints backrow. He made his England debut in March, playing 32 minutes with Wales. However, he made a considerable impression there, scoring in his debut, and his stock has risen since.
His performance at Northampton last weekend in a surprising victory over Rainster solidified his spot with his team. His mission is now to continue this incredible trajectory and gate crash the test team. Ellis Jenge calls him “Peacock.” Itoje – with a smile – calls him a “pest.” Whatever he is, he has the potential to emerge as a cult hero on this tour. It received much greater cheer when his name was read out at the O2 Arena on Thursday in front of about 2,000 fans.
“I’ve seen him several times live and I like what I see,” Farrell said of Pollock. “Like all top players, he’s always making a difference. There’s energy and bounce about him. It tends to have big moments in the game as you’re looking for them.
Itoje was already on stage when the team was read out. He was confirmed as the Lions captain in 2025 and smiled at the reception Pollock received. It was him in 2017 when he was a young gun trying to disrupt the established order. Pollock is just one of the 38 players selected, but he will dominate the headlines from the announcement of this team.
“If you’re good enough, you’re old enough,” Farrell said. “He’s ready to compete. I think you’ll see his fight. I think everyone can see it anyway. I’m sure he’ll push everything else he didn’t realize he was coming.
The need for a “hybrid player”
Pollock’s choice is a neat little curveball from team Pharrell, which had few. The other was Marcus Smith’s inclusion. He was a man who drifted out of the discussion before the announcement. Smith was shifted from fly half to fullback, welcoming six turbulent countries, benching towards Italy, and came eight minutes later and started again at number 15 against Wales.
But that’s its versatility played in his hands. Smith considers himself a fly half, but Farrell loves the fact that he can cover multiple positions. The Lions Tour is about juggling. The packed nature of the schedule usually means that Lions coaches aim to send completely different teams for the mid-week game between the first and second tests. The versatility lies there.
So when Farrell was choosing a team, he didn’t see Marcus Smith competing for a team spot with fly-half specialists like George Ford and Sam Prendagast. Instead, Smith played against players like Tom Jordan, who could cover multiple positions.

That fly-half debate was one area where there were many question marks on the way to the presentation. Finally, Farrell went with Finn Russell, Finn Smith and Marcus Smith as three teens, leaving out Sam Prendagast, Owen Farrell and George Ford.
The ruthless edge
There was a theory that Pharrell would run around quickly to the team. Tea leaves certainly read this. Prendagast mentor Johnny Sexton is on coaching tickets, but once Farrell finishes with the Lions he will return to work for the day as Ireland’s head coach.
But future plans, sentimentality, there is a series to win. Prendergast was not ready and could not fit into the team. At least, it’s not yet.
And that also applies to the omission of Andy’s son, Owen Farrell. Owen is one of England’s greats, but spent last year in France and went on a campaign struggling with Race 92.

Andy Farrell explains the omitted from the Lions squad son Owen
British and Ireland’s Lions coach Andy Farrell explains why he excluded Owen Farrell from the Australian tour team.
The squad size of 38 means he has some wiggling rooms – we’re hoping that one or two names will be added before the team’s touchdown in Perth ahead of the opening game in Australian soil on June 28th.
Players like Jamie George, Tom Jordan and George Ford (the risk of being the biggest stop to run for the Lions), Owen Farrell, Manny Feiwaboso (who was injured but can play again by the end of the season), Prandalgusto and Darcy Graham hope to receive the late call. Owen Farrell is in the box seat here.
Heartbreak for Doris… and more
There are slow changes, as are the way these teams are presented.
Caelan Doris is a shattered and unfortunate man who missed a shoulder injury the night before his choice. As one of the two main candidates for the team’s captain, he may have been sitting in Ito’s seat, but for the hammer blow he received on Saturday.
“As you can imagine, he’s in ruins,” Farrell said of Doris.
“He would definitely have been in the mix, an experienced player and leader. That’s devastating for those people.”
Of his chosen players, Farrell was stuck with Irish conditioning and struck a decent balance throughout the group, including two Welsh players who had no many Welsh players.
He only went with one player based in France, Blair Kinghorn. It saw Jack Willis ignore them and others like David Livans who could have read their names. But most of all, this is a balanced team, a versatile team, and while it can play in a few different ways, there is also a spine that knows what it takes to win these Test matches.
It’s a team where Pollock is the headline name, but for the reason you want: Here’s a young player who grabbed the sport with the neck.
He is anthropomorphism of Bolter, and is truly the purpose of the Lions Tour. He has the opportunity to make himself a famous name.
A sense of history
Itoje hopes this team will become “selfless.”
On Wednesday evening he had dinner with some former Lions captains. Brian O’Driscoll, Martin Johnson, Sam Warburton and Arun Wynn Jones were all there.
This makes it a flies on the wall.
They would have provided itoje with words of wisdom and small advice. That’s what happens with this honor. All of these types of opportunities are part of the rich tapestry offered by the Lions Tour.
There’s a lot of nostalgia, but some of the team’s biggest wins and some of the intestine crazy lows. The challenge for the class of 2025 is to lie on the right side of the Lions history. And the process began on Thursday in East London.
The challenge with this lot is to prove that Farrell was right in choosing them.
