MONACO – Carlos Alcaraz reached the final of the Monte Carlo Masters on Saturday, requiring six match points to clear out Spanish compatriot Alejandro Davidevich Fochina 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Third place Alcaraz will face Italian Lorenzo Msetti as he reaches his 23rd Tour-level final and bid for his first trophy at Monte Carlo.
Alcaraz took a break on the first set, but Davidovic-Fokina saved three set points to force Tie Breaker.
“He saved a lot of breakpoints and matchpoints,” Alcaraz said. “The most important thing is that I feel great physically.”
Ranked 13th, Musetti defeated Alex De Minaur 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the semi-finals. The Italian player ousted defending champion Stefanos Tittipas in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Sunday’s final was scheduled to take place three hours earlier than originally planned as heavy rain was predicted in the evening.
After winning the French Open at last year’s Parisilympics and finishing with a silver medal, it will be Alcaraz’s third consecutive clay court final.
