Chelsea may address their defensive situation in January, considering they have struggled in that department so far this season. Enzo Maresca’s side have kept just three clean sheets in 10 games in all competitions, showing that Levi Colwill’s absence is starting to be felt.
Colwill ruptured his ACL during pre-season and is out for the foreseeable future, leaving Maresca lacking quality at the heart of the defence. This issue could therefore be addressed when the transfer window reopens in January.
Chelsea have no plans to sign Ronald Araujo in January
Chelsea have been linked with Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo in recent weeks, but according to Pete O’Rourke (via Football Insider) he is not someone they are planning to make a move for in January. However, the door could be opened for a deal as early as next summer.
“I don’t think Chelsea will do anything in January. Liverpool were rumored in the summer. Again, we don’t know if they will try to sign him in January. Both clubs will be looking at his long-term situation at Barcelona.”
“If Barcelona show signs of selling Araujo, other clubs may also be willing to sign the Uruguayan international. Come next summer, if Barcelona’s financial situation does not improve, that could open the door to a possible transfer.”
Araujo has had a difficult start to the season at Barcelona and has struggled to regain his regular place. He is not thought to be the best fit for manager Hansi Flick’s ultra-aggressive high-line approach, but this could pave the way for Chelsea to make an approach in 2026. Coupled with the La Liga giants’ financial woes, their star players could soon line up for this match.
