Kershaw will make his 11th All-Star appearance as the “Legacy Pick” of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.
“I didn’t even know that was something,” Kershaw told Bill Plunkett on the Orange County Register. “I played in the All-Star Game in 2014 with (Derek) Jeter. I’ve forgotten the others he said: Migie Cabrera and Albert (Pujols).
“After all, it’s weird, but it’s cool, so I’m going to enjoy it.”
The surprising news comes just days after Kershaw recorded his 3,000th career strikeout against the Chicago White Sox. After becoming the 20th pitcher in MLB history to achieve the feat, Kershaw was informed by manager Dave Roberts that he would represent the of the Midsummer Classic.
“I don’t know if Doc is looking for a surprise factor,” Kershaw said. “But I didn’t know until he said that.
“No matter the circumstances, I don’t take it for granted that I go to the All-Star Game,” he said. “Obviously I don’t deserve to go this season. I’m not pitching much. But whatever it includes to go to the All-Star Game, I can take my family with me.
“That’s an incredible honour. I’m grateful to go. No matter the situation or how I sneak into the All-Star Game, it’s pretty cool to go.”
Kershaw began the season on an injured list as he recovered from two offseason surgeries. The three-time Cy Young winner returned to the much-anticipated mound in May.
Kershaw has won a 3.38 ERA with 10 strikeouts and 1.243 whips this season. The rely on veteran southpaws in the middle of their injuries, relying on staple starters such as Tyler Glasnow (who returned from IL earlier this week), Sagaro Island and Blake Snell.
