Crystal Palace raised eyebrows at the asking price attached to defender and club captain Mark Gehi.
The Eagles knew that England International would stop joining Liverpool during the summer transfer period and that the defender would become free agent next summer.
They could lose him for free next year, but the Palace was able to decide to acquire a defender during the January transfer period.
Crystal Palace is ready to let Liverpool targets leave
According to Spanish outlet Fichege, the palace may have Gehi in January, but his contract is only what many call exceptional cut prices, despite the contract still going up until mid-2026.
The numbers are dramatic. Especially compared to the £35 million offer, compared to the Defending Premier League Champions offer made during the summer transfer period.
Over the summer, Liverpool has been very close to signing Gehi. The £35 million offer was accepted by the palace, and the players received medical care and all seemed to agree. However, at the last time in the transfer window, the transaction was withdrawn.
The Palace failed to secure a proper replacement to line up the Jaydie Canbots of Toulouse to fill the void that losing the captain would leave.
Will Arne Slot need to sign Guehi in January?
Liverpool is currently weighing their options carefully. They were able to revisit the offer in January and revisit the delay until Guéhi became a free agent in the summer of 2026.
It all depends on Virgil van Dik and Ibrahima Conate’s form, fitness and performance until the January transfer period.
At the moment, they have the Reds Joe Gomez as their backup so they aren’t hopeless to have to sign Gehi in January, but it could all change in a few months, depending on the team and manager’s request.
