Brooklyn Nets star Dangelo Russell has been overwhelmed by the enthusiastically contested NBA MVP race this season, sharing his strong opinions on who deserves the prestigious award.
With the debate continuing to center around Denver Nuggets Center’s Nikola Jokic and Oklahoma City Thunder Guard’s Shy Gill Gas Alexander, Russell made his stance clear about which superstars should claim the trophy.
Russell believes that not only does the Serbian big man win this year’s MVP, but he also suggests that Jokic is underrated in previous MVP races.
“Jokic is going to win an MVP. He should now continue like his fifth MVP. That’s what it is. That’s where I stand.”
Despite his clear support for Jokic, Russell was careful not to reduce the SGA’s notable campaign, in recognition of the Thunderstar’s groundbreaking season.
“We’re going to keep it all because Shy, Flower, Brother, I haven’t taken anything from you, but we can’t just keep watching.”
Both nominees presented a compelling case for the award. Jokic averaged triple doubles throughout the regular season. This is a notable achievement for the centre.
Meanwhile, the SGA led the NBA in several statistical categories, particularly in points per game, leading young lightning to elite status in the Western Conference.
The neck and neck race also divides NBA players, fans and analysts, referring to a variety of indicators and achievements for passionate supporters on both sides to strengthen the candidate’s case.
Interestingly, Russell was a solid supporter of Jokic for the MVP, but he expressed skepticism about the Nuggets’ chances in their first round playoffs.
The series against the Los Angeles Clippers is currently tied 1-1, but the former Golden State Warriors player believes the Nuggets’ coaching situation will be important.
“I think coaching is important and Denver really doesn’t have that. They’re having problems in that situation,” Russell said.
“Jokic is the best player in the world. I can’t bet on him, but if Kauhi (Leonard) and James (Harden) do what they’ve been doing all season, there’s no way they’ll lose,” he predicted.
