Daniel Cormier suspects Tyson vs. Mayweather "fans want violence"

Daniel Cormier has questions regarding Mike Tyson sharing the ring with Floyd Mayweather.

The Boxing Legend recently announced plans to meet at the exhibition boxing match, with dates and locations that have not yet been decided. Tyson and Mayweather are two of the biggest stars in combat sports history, with countless titles and classic battles of their names, but given the age at which the two have progressed, Mayweather is 48 years old), although there is a big size difference between them, Mayweather is not competing, but not at 155 pounds.

Cormier is concerned that fans attending the event will remain disappointed.

“I think fans want violence,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “But they may not. Mike says we can give us what we want, but what can they give us without the violence they promise us? Floyd signs up for that, knowing that it is a possibility.”

Mayweather retired in 2017 and scored a 50-0 professional record after beating UFC star Conor McGregor. Since then, he has participated in several exhibition matches, facing influencer Logan Paul and Japanese kickboxing standout Naskawa.

Tyson also dabbled in the world of exhibition matches, drawing an eight-round draw with former heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, and returned to professional in 2024 for a widely seen fight with Jake Paul.

Even though they knew they were at another stage of their illustrious career, Cormier could have thought of a word to describe their future superfights.

“It’s ridiculous,” Cormier said. “200 pounds. 140. Floyd Mayweather was fighting at 154 and he got really small at 154. Floyd Mayweather was the guy who fought to start his career in the 130s. Accounts have a great wife who started his new business, got his life back on track, and helped him manage all of them, and made a lot of money to fight Jake Paul last year.

“Floyd, I saw him talking this morning about keeping his money clean and stuffing hundreds of thousands of dollars into plastic bags. These guys don’t need money. When these great champions are fighting Prime well, it’s about making a lot of money.

Tyson’s match with Paul broke streaming audience records airing live on Netflix, but the fight was heavily criticised for his lack of action as Paul won an unforgettable decision. Now, fans probably look like they’re selling invoices for the goods again, but Cormier wonders how much the athletes involved can actually string them together without delivering them on a fight night.

“My biggest question about these things is how men, especially great people, are explaining to the public that they see the battle between Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather, but it’s going to be a real battle, it’s going to be an exhibition,” Cormier said. “In that exhibition, should you believe they are actually fighting? …When there are huge differences in size, can Floyd and Mike fight 100%? Can Mike Tyson attack Floyd Mayweather?

“Floyd Mayweather hasn’t done much damage in his career when you see him. Floyd hasn’t been hit much. Floyd has all the faculties about himself. He’s still in good spirits. He’ll take all the risks to fight Mike Tyson in the “exhibition.”
