Earlier this month, Roberts explained why the and Otani came to an agreement to pause his throwing progress.
“We just felt like we weren’t smart (as DH) to strengthen the bullpen in line with the intensity of the game, so we just wanted to delay it,” Roberts said.
Otani reaffirmed that there were no collisions on the road, but instead he felt that it was best to focus on the hit for the time being.
“I wanted to prioritize the batting side as we enter the season and bring a little mental and physical life on the pitching side of things,” Otani said through an interpreter before the Tokyo Series in Japan. “This is based on the plan and I’m very pleased with how things are going.”
The don’t provide a timeline for Otani’s pitching debut in 2025, but he is expected to take the mound early this season. Saturday’s bullpen session will be an important first step in that process.
The defending champion is navigating new territory with Otani’s two-way status. pitching coach Mark Mark explained that there are countless complexities in the situation.
“It was… one of those things we had to resort to a lot on him,” Prior said. “We don’t have this template or roadmap in person or even have actually dealt with a guy with a two-way situation, so we’re leaning towards his feelings. I know they’re trying to control the overall workload management on their left shoulder.
