The Los Angeles appeared to have been unraveled in the seams a week ago. The defending champions lost the game they were supposed to have won, and the San Diego Padres sat alone in the first place in the NL West for this.

After being swept by the Los Angeles Angels, the looked lost as they moved down the Interstate 5 highway for the rival series that had a major impact on the rest of the season.

San Diego played best baseball in its strengthened lineup and bullpen thanks to a surge in movement at trade deadlines. Meanwhile, the continued to fight injuries with Max Muncie and Brock Stewart (LA’s most notable pickup at deadline) on the injured list.

Rather than stumbling throughout the season, the found their focus and hit their path.

The Padres’ three-game sweep featured perhaps the best performance of the defending champion season. The starting rotation, which didn’t look strong all season, gave the 17 strong inning jobs, allowing only three runs.

Smoke-running sick bullpen managed to close all three games. The consistent lineup shines on what is consistent when it matters most.

The series was an encouraging sign that brings out the best and closes October.

manager Dave Roberts was proud of the way his team fought against the set of three games.

“I’m very pleased considering where we were four days ago,” Roberts said. “It’s a big deal to see how we strengthened our focus, the strength and clearly there are three ball games here (tight ball games, well-played games) coming out in three wins.”

Cleaning up the Padres was a great feat for LA, but the need to bring that momentum to Colorado before heading to San Diego for another big series.
