The added left-handed pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Anthony Vanda, but still chose to carry 11 pitchers (12 including two-way player Shohei Ohtani).
Roberts revealed why both Henriquez and Willobulkski left the roster after being on the wildcard roster.
Why is Edgard Henriquez not on the NLDS roster?
“At Henriquez, it was a bit easier in terms of how to build a lineup, left and right,” Roberts said. “You got a glass in the pen for this game. There are other right-handed people. That’s a lot of left-handed lanes.”
Henriquez also struggled with the wildcard, making one appearance in Game 1, scoring a zero-out while allowing hits, two walks and runs he scored.
Why isn’t Justin Willobluski on the ‘ NLDS roster?
Roberts said the decision at Wrobleski would be more difficult. The left-handed didn’t appear in the wildcards, but there were three straight-scoreless outings to end the regular season.
“I think it’s really hard when I use Wrobo because he plays so well and to be honest with you, you can’t really justify it,” Roberts said. “I think we wanted Clayton. Clayton got the opportunity to join this roster (and) I’m going to use him accordingly, and with Banda, something like his skill set is to really take away the left-handed batsman specifically.”
Because of that value, Wrobleski shook against the Phillies in mid-September, recording only one five run scored with five hits.
The have five left-handed saviors: Calshaw, Banda, Alex Vescia, Tanner Scott and Jack Dreyer. It clearly felt like jointly with Roberts was more than enough. With this top 5 series.
