Liverpool was able to go business in January despite already spending over £400 million over the summer. A new centre-back could appear on the agenda following Geovanni Leoni’s ACL injury, but there was also a talk about another eviction.
In the summer, Joe Gomez was close to leaving Liverpool, but after Mark Guech’s slow movement fell he stayed at Anfield. However, he could still move into the middle of the season. AC Milan in particular is very enthusiastic about his service.
Liverpool was hoping to keep Joe Gomez in January
Nevertheless, Pete O’Rourke (via Football Insider) says it’s unlikely that Liverpool will allow Gomez to leave in January, given the lack of depth Arne Slot has in central defense.
“It’s very unlikely that Liverpool will consider letting go of Joe Gomez, especially with the current centre-back issue. Leoni’s injuries were also a major blow after not bringing in Guech.
“As well as for Gomez, he’s very versatile, that even in the defensive midfield he did under Jurgen Klopp, he can play right-back, left-back. The summer window was clearly interested from AC Milan.
“They probably won’t lose centre-back in January, and I think that’s what they’re doing now.”
Given the obvious issues at centre-back, it makes sense for Gomez to stay at Liverpool at least until the end of the season. Considering his contract expires in 2027, next summer will be the right time for him to leave.
