Wilian Poles entered the cage on Saturday night and faced Daniel Alves, but his opponent never appeared.
A lightweight match in the BSB fight in Brazilian Brasilia, Paul walked to the cage and told committee officials there was no fight, but they still applied petrolatum to his face and went on a normal pre-war routine. Seconds later, BSB fought against promoter Roger Vieira, who is also Alves’ coach, and announced Alves in the microphone at an event where he can’t find anywhere.
“I’m very angry about this situation,” Vieira said Saturday night. “Willian Samurai” was about to fight from the south (in Brazil) and fight the athletes from my gym, and the athletes disappeared.
Annoyed Poles vented his turn.
“I crossed five states to take down this guy, where is he?” Pauls said. “This is bullshit. Man. I cut 26 pounds and 11 pounds in two weeks on the last day. This guy isn’t here.”
Vieira told MMA Fighting on Tuesday that the last time he heard from Alves was five hours before the event began. According to the coach/promoter, Alves is said to have returned to his mother’s house and feel “embarrassed” about the whole situation.
According to record-keeping website Tapology, Alves was 8-3 in one contest at MMA, and Vieira said, “It’s not the first time he’s done this.”
“He once said he was feeling bad during the week of the fight, and I could replace him, and another time he said he wasn’t OK after the measurement,” Vieira said. “This time, he hasn’t explained it.”
When Alves contacted me for this story, he did not respond immediately to the message.
Poles was paid for his show and won the money, Vieira said. Alves received half of the show in advance for $500 (about $90 US) and received $90 after the match.
The referee raised Pauls’ hand after the unusual circumstances and said he would attempt to include “knockouts or submissions” in his official walkover record. Vieira said that was hope, but that’s unlikely.
