MIAMI – Diego Lopez feels he is a threat to Alexander Volkanovsky in every way possible in MMA.
Submit, knock out, or decide victory – that doesn’t matter.
Lopes (27-6 MMA, 6-1 UFC) feels he has all the tools he needs to defeat Volkanovski (26-5 MMA, 13-4 UFC) and bring home the vacant UFC featherweight title. The two will meet at the main event of UFC 314 (Pay-Per-View, ESPN, ESPN+) at Kaseya Center on Saturday.
“I think either opportunity first appeared,” Lopez told MMA Junkie in Spanish at UFC 316 Media Day on Wednesday. “I have heavy hands to put him in, and my jiu-jitsu is also dangerous, both at the top and at the bottom. I’ve seen him clearly not finished on the ground.
Lopez knows he faces the greatest of all time in UFC featherweight history. Winning Volkanovski will bring wonders to his legacy and fighting career. Lopez is sure to win the belt, but he knows he has a lot of work to do after that.
“I still lack the trajectory, but I still lack the trajectory because of the records I have, a little time at the UFC, and how quickly things have developed for my career,” Lopez explained in Spanish. “I think I have the time, but I’m going to work hard to be one of the greatest people in the department.”
