Third seed Cocogoff crushed American Sophia Kenin 6-0 at the Miami Open on Thursday.
Aiming to win the Maiden Miami title, Gouff scored 84% of her first serve points, facing six of nine breakpoints in the 47-minute match, saving one breakpoint.
“It was definitely going well today, but maybe she wasn’t playing Peak’s great tennis,” Gouf told reporters.
“I don’t think anyone playing the best tennis has that scoreline today, so I’m not going to sit here and say she played the best tennis.”
Next up after Gauff, who was eliminated in 16 rounds at Indian Wells last week, is Ashlin Luger, who surprised the seventh seed Elena Rybakina 6-4 2-6 6-4 in the first top-10 victory of her career.
Top seed and two-time Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka played their first match since losing to Mirra Andreeva in the Indian Wells Finals, breaking Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova six times for a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Sabalenka faces the trickery of qualifying Elena Gabriella in the third round after the Bulgarians advance to Poland’s 29th seed Magdalena Fretsch in a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Italian Jasmine Paolini and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen also went on, with Canada’s Leylah Fernandez defeating the US Alycia Parks 7-6 (1) 6-3.
On the men’s side, Riley Opelka has won his first ATP Master 1,000 wins since 2022 in a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over American wildcard Christopher Eubanks, facing Indian Wells finalist Holga Rune in the second round.
China’s Bu Yunchaookete defeated the UK’s Cameron Norrie 6-4 6-2 without facing breakpoints and qualifiers Jacob Fearnley and Thiago Agustin Tirante.
After reaching the semi-finals of last week’s ATP Challenger Tour event, former finalist Kay Nishikoli has withdrawn from his Miami opener.
“My body hasn’t recovered enough since last week’s game. I’m going home now and ready for clay court season,” Nishikori writes to X.
