Edgar Berlanga Jr. appears to be focusing a bit more on Oscar de la Jolla than his upcoming fight.
On Saturday, Berlanga will face Hamzah Sheeraz in a super-middleweight match in the main event of the Dazn boxing card in New York City. In the joint main event, De La Jolla fighter William Zepeda challenged Shakur Stephenson for the WBC lightweight title, with all involved attending a pre-release press conference on Thursday.
Before the event, Berlanga revealed his dislike for Dela Hoya and threatened physical violence against him, which did not happen, but he caused a scene and called Dela Hoya a stripper.
On his side, de la Jolla laughed from the gag, but then fired at Berlanga that he was not a world champion, questioning Puerto Rican heritage.
“In fact, I’ll do! First, sit down,” said de la Jolla. “You don’t have a world title. Let’s put it here now! I have some here for you! Listen to me, this guy isn’t even Puerto Rican! I’ve been asking for your Puerto Rican passport! I’m more Puerto Rican than you! Your jewelry is as fake as your victory!”
Things continued to escalate until security stepped in and prevented Berlanga from facing Dela Joya.
After de la Jolla delved into the former fighter Canelo, criticising the contest’s value, the two beef returned to the battle with Canelo Alvarez of Berlanga. Berlanga attacked what was simply a collateral damage but was seen as such. Berlanga continued to lose its unanimous decision to Alvarez.
