Wimbledon, England — America’s third seed Jessica Pegra suffered an early loss in the majors since 2020 as Italian Elisabetta Cocchialetto beat 6-2, 6-3 in the first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Pegra, 31, came to Wimbledon behind his ninth career title in Bad Homburg, Germany. She wore tape on her left knee.
The match took less than an hour. Pegra is the best species that falls on either female or male singles.
Pegra defeated Coxialett in her only previous meeting at Wimbledon in 2023, but hit only five winners and made 24 unlimited errors when she was defeated. She also struggled with her second serve, earning just 42% of the points.
This is the first time an American has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam event since the French Open in 2020.
Cocciaretto will play either German Tatiana Maria or another American Katie Volynets in the second round.
