Former WorldSBK rider Eugene Laberty says Toprak Razgatlioglu will benefit from bringing his current crew, Phil Marron, to MotoGP.
Laverty won all 13 World Superbike Races with Marron between 2011 and 2014, and continued to work with his fellow countrymen when he moved to MotoGP at ASPAR in 2015.
After Laverty left the SMR Aprilia team at the end of 2018, and then left Go Eleven Ducati, Marron worked with Toprak Razgatlioglu with the Puccetti Kawasaki team, staying with Turkish riders in both world superbike race victory and world titles.
Laverty’s MotoGP career spanned two seasons, but two very different seasons. From Bridgestone to Michelin. From split categories of people who own factory electronics and controlled electronics to electronics where everyone has the same ECU. And for him and the ASPAR team, from the low-powered Open Honda to the 2-year-old Ducati Desmosedici GP14.
His performance took a step forward in his second year, earning top 10 results, including fourth in Argentina.
Phil Maron fett as the key to Toplac Razgatriogle
The Northern Irish said that Maron was not only an important person to be in his corner, as he moved between the paddocks because of understanding each other, but also because of some of Maron’s specific qualities.
“I think we need to bring in people who are well versed in how to ride a bike and what they need,” Eugene Lebertty said, speaking to crash.net at WorldSBK in the UK.
“Phil (Marron) uses his ears more than the crew chief I have ever worked for, and he really listens.
“Rider isn’t saying anything just to say that, and Phil really understands it.
“So he always stayed silent and tried to delve into that information, saying as many words as he wanted to say to the rider.
“He did an amazing job for Toprak (Razgatlioglu). He was with him in Yamaha.
“I don’t know if we’ve yet confirmed whether we’ll go to MotoGP with him next year, but because he’ll need to have Phil with him to move on to a MotoGP bike with a different brand of tires.”
Speaking to Crash.Net last December, Marron confirmed that he was interested in returning to MotoGP from World Superbike with Razgatlioglu.
