Sunderland’s ambitious summer recruitment plans have undergone a dramatic shift. Former Everton CEO Keith Wynes suggests the club can take part in the famous coup.
The name may raise an eyebrow, but the report is being taken seriously by the club’s backroom team.
At 30, Sterling brings bloodlines. His experience competing at the top level and earning major honors after starring in both City and Liverpool is invaluable to Sunderland.
His presence could provide a big lift for both the dressing room and the pitch.
Sunderland helped sign Chelsea star Raheem Sterling
Speaking to the football insider, Wynes explained that Sterling’s options are limited given the situation at Chelsea, pointing to Sunderland alongside Leeds and Burnley as his destination.
He said:
“I think moving him will be a big problem.
“In my opinion, you are limited to three clubs that are really approaching: Leeds, Burnley, Sunderland, and that’s what I think he might find space.
“But again, the wages have to pay him a really large grant to get some move, but I think it will become the case.
“It’s going to be a difficult move and I don’t know how much he’s still on his contract, but it still needs to be a great grant to them to get him there.”
Sterling has no future at Stamford Bridge
After spending his time on loan at Arsenal last season, the British attackers were unable to live up to expectations at Emirates Stadium.
His Chelsea career is uncertain with no players in the plans of manager Enzo Maresca.
Bruce is looking for younger options in the market for a wide range of offensive positions, which makes it clear that Sterling doesn’t have a future at Stamford Bridge.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens of Borussia Dortmund is a Blues radar player this summer.
Lyon’s Malic Fofana is another player chased by the Giants in the Premier League.
