Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided a major update on the future of Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.
The Italian journalist said on his YouTube channel that he can “guarantee” Maguire is open to remaining at Man United despite approaching the final months of his current contract at Old Trafford.
As it stands, Maguire’s contract is due to expire at the end of this season, and Romano says the club has no option of triggering an extension.
That means United will have to negotiate a completely new contract, and talks are already underway.
Fabrizio Romano talks about Harry Maguire’s new Manchester United contract
Romano said: “The signing of Harry Maguire remains a key topic of discussion between Manchester United and the player’s representatives.
“There have already been two meetings, one in person at Carrington, and negotiations will continue. Salary will also be an important part of the negotiations, but I can guarantee you that Harry Maguire is really positive about staying at Manchester United and finding a solution with the club. So negotiations will continue.”
“Remember, his contract expires in the summer of 2026 and does not include an extension option. So the option was triggered a year ago. The contract was extended until 2026. Now Harry Maguire has to negotiate a completely new contract with Manchester United. Discussions are ongoing, but the numbers should be different.”
“We’ll see what happens. But Maguire’s contract is one of the topics being discussed and Manchester United are now showing even more of his quality again.”
Maguire has had his ups and downs as a United player, but has recently become a really solid and reliable player in the squad under Ruben Amorim.
The 32-year-old still appears to have a key role for the Red Devils, and fans will no doubt be hoping that this deal can be finalized quickly, as Romano has hinted.
