  • Don’t think cash will affect them – Shubman Gill – Michael Vaughan from Ben Stokes
  • I guarantee it will improve the pace – Michael Vaughn
  • Shubman’s Gill-led India loses three wickets on the second day after limiting England to 387

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughn criticised Indian skipper Shubman Gill and England captain Ben Stokes for a slow overrating in the third Test of his five-game series at Lords. Vaughn said that fines do little to change the slow excess rate, as players are wealthy and can afford them easily.

India and the UK are currently playing their third Test, with the series still settling evenly at 1-1. A total of 22 overs were lost in the first two days. India was able to bowl 83 overs on day 1, but both sides were combined with just 75 overs on day 2. They weren’t below the mandatory 90 over 15 on their second day play.

Michael Vaughn shared his views on the late, excessive issues since the second day of the third Test. The former England captain, who spoke to Isa Guha at BBC Sports, said the fine was ineffective. He added that completing 90 overs every day is essential for Test cricket.

“I don’t think the fines will work. I think these young people are very rich,” Vaughn told BBC Sports with a laugh.

“I don’t think cash will affect them. It’s been a test match cricket issue for a while. I know it’s hot. I know we’ve got some injuries, but when we reach the fifth day, we have to bowl 90 overs,” he added.

“Why, on days 1, 2, 3, 4, you can see the game being played at a snail pace. I say the game is certainly 90 overs.

Michael Vaughn emphasized that completing a full 90-over allocation every day should be unnegotiable in Test cricket. He pointed out on the fifth day that fewer breaks and delays make the game move faster. Vaughn added that the rules should be strictly enforced for all five days.

“We see players know they have to bowl 90 overs on the fifth day. They’re running around. There’s not much drink break. They know they need to bowl 90 overs, so there’s not much delay. So you need to bowl 90 overs.
