Gilbert Arenas believes Luka Doncic will lead the NBA in scoring, significantly more than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Luka Doncic is set for a great season with the Los Angeles Lakers, and the superstar guard is in incredible shape right now.
Last night, we got a glimpse of what kind of player Doncic will become when he made his preseason debut with the Lakers, scoring 25 points with solid efficiency.
Doncic’s bad habits showed in his points during the game, but he was truly phenomenal from a scoring standpoint.
And it was this performance that prompted Gilbert Arenas to make the case for Doncic ahead of the new NBA season.
Gilbert Arenas recently spoke on his podcast about Luka Doncic and his expectations for next season. He believes Doncic will lead the NBA in scoring.
Arenas explained that given LeBron’s injury issues and the remaining weaknesses of the Lakers, Doncic will take a lot of shots and average 35 points per game.
“He hit his stride last year in Dallas. He got hurt and then he put on weight. It worked out for him. Then he came here (to the Lakers) overweight. What was his average? 28?
“Then he lost weight. What was his average overseas? I expect him to get a triple-double all season.”
“He might be able to hit. If he doesn’t, the rest of the team will keep him away from the assist part.”
“He’s definitely going to lead the league in scoring… Have you seen the team? There’s a guy who just runs around the court, it was like MyPlayer… That’s what Marcus Smart did last night…”
“We’ve got them on the team. Yes, he’s making all the shots. SGA is trying to win another championship. If LeBron doesn’t play, the rest of the team is going to look like this…”
“He’ll be out and about, baby! The average age will be about 35. The job will be easy.”
Even though the numbers look good, Luka Doncic can’t just snap his way out of the Lakers’ predicament next season.
We’ve seen time and time again that even a player with a high usage rate or shot attempts per game can’t have an impact on winning if the rest of the team doesn’t perform.
As a leader, Doncic is expected to not only score the ball, but also distribute the ball and help his teammates perform as best as possible.
Doncic is one of the NBA’s best floor raisers, and if he can improve the rest of the team with his playmaking, the Lakers will be formidable next season.
