The Houston Rockets have received some big bad news ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season.
The Houston Rockets have approached this offseason to increase their chances of winning the NBA Championship.
It all started with a Kevin Durant deal. This is a deal that is considered the best offseason move. However, less than a month has passed in the 2025-26 NBA season, the Rocket has been hit hard.
It came in the form of Fred Vanvrit, suffering a broken injury to the ACL. Rockets fans are distrustful of the point guard injuries. But the terrible news can turn out to be a disguise blessing for one player.
Given that Rockets has 14 of its 15 rosters filled, the easiest way is to choose a point guard from the open market.
Plus, the likes of Ben Simmons and Russell Westbrook are still looking for the next team. However, the team is hard capped in the first apron until June 30, 2026, as Rocket signs Dorian Finney Smith using most of the $14.1 million non-tax mid-level exceptions.
Currently, the rocket costs just $1.2 million more than the original apron. This eliminates the possibility of signing Simmons or Westbrook.
On a positive note, the Rockets welcomed JD Davison to the roster early in the offseason on a two-way contract.
He likely brought in for additional help during the regular season, but the Rockets are now able to rely on Davison as a potential starting point guard.
Apart from Davison, the Rockets have two options: Play Aaron’s Holiday or get bigger. However, on holidays he has always been a bench player in the NBA.
An even better reason to rely on Davison is his 23-year-old G-League career. Davison averaged 25.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 7.6 assists per game for the Boston Celtics G-League team last season.
Davison’s efforts were recognized as he won the 2025 G League MVP. On top of that, he shot 48.3% solid shots from the field last season.
Davison struggled during the Celtics’ sporadic NBA appearances, but playing starter minutes helps him adjust to the league.
Unless the Rockets engaged in trade, trusting Davison seems like a solid move for a team heading into the regular season.
