Chauncey Billups was arrested Thursday in connection with illegal gambling activities.

As a result, Chauncey Billups He plans to resign as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers as the legal battle begins.

The Blazers have named assistant coach Tiago Splitter as Billups’ interim replacement.

The Blazers were seen as a team on the rise in the Western Conference this season, but now they need to cut through the noise and stay focused on the 2025-26 season.

George Karl coached Billups when he was traded to the Denver Nuggets on November 3, 2008.

He coached Billups from the 2008-2009 season to the 2010-2011 season.

This partnership led to a major turnaround for the Nuggets, including a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 2009, and saved Karl’s job.

Carl expressed support for the 49-year-old considering Billups’ situation.

“I have always felt that Chauncey is a better leader and a great person.

“And I will always be grateful to him for helping me continue my coaching career in Denver.

“I’m worried about him today, but I hope for the best.”

The Blazers almost started the season with an upset win against Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves, falling 118-114 in the opener.

Jerami Grant led the Blazers with 29 points off the bench, while Deni Avdija showed why he is poised for a breakout season with 20 points.

Many expect the Blazers to be a lottery team this season due to their strength in the West, but they have a lot of young talent that could surprise people.

However, it will be a difficult obstacle to overcome as Portland will have to continue the season without Billups.
