Frankie Edgar believes that the fighter, which currently holds the lightweight UFC gold, is on track to become the greatest thing the division has ever seen.
Former title holder himself Edgar (24-11-1 MMA, 18-11-1 UFC) won the lightweight title in 2010 and defended it twice. Edgar recently told MMA Junkie Radio that the 155-pound goat pick was Islam Makachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC), despite his high praise on the ERA.
In comparison, Makhachev defended the title four times, beating Alexander Volkanovsky (twice), Dustin Poilier and Renato Moicano. He is currently not fighting with books.
“Islam, if he continues the path he does, you have to give it to him,” Edgar said. “He’s finishing everyone. He’s not just defending the title. He’s finishing the guy. He’s probably taking the cake.”
Edgar is a proud champion, but his decision to retire in 2022 echoed peacefully. However, the grind has not stopped. Edgar said being a family man and a wrestling coach keeps him busy enough.
“(I) coach kids in wrestling,” Edgar said. “It’s definitely all nerves, all worries, and all the joys you get from it, I think it’s the closest thing to (fighting).”
