Freddie Freeman was the last minute scratch in the opening day lineup for the Los Angeles of the Tokyo Series. The first baseman dealt with the discomfort of the rib in the same area that he broke the rib in the postseason.
With Freeman’s injury and outfielder Mookie Betts fighting illness, the started the 2025 season without two star players. But fortunately, for Los Angeles, Freeman gave Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times a promising update on Monday’s injuries.

“Hopefully it’ll be an afterthought by Thursday,” Freeman told Harris. “I bumped into a cage and could do whatever I wanted to do on Game 2 (in Japan) day, but I didn’t know if it would come back or how fast the game was.
Freeman also told Harris that he believes the discomfort is a result of scar tissue accumulated from postseason rib injuries. Freeman also said the injury healed enough to avoid an MRI.
Freeman maintained his broken rib cartilage just a day before the National League Division Series with the San Diego Padres. The eighth All-Star endured ankle sprain through the ‘ World Series run.

Despite two convulsion injuries, Freeman won to take home the eighth World Series title in franchise history. Additionally, the 35-year-old was named the World Series MVP after his impressive postseason performance at the plate.
manager Dave Roberts said reporters’ Freeman’s recent rib injury was “not as serious as he dealt with in the postseason.
Freeman is back in the lineup for Sunday’s spring training games with the Los Angeles Angels at Stadium. He played in the first two games of the series, but has yet to record a hit since returning.
Meanwhile, Betts has not returned to the lineup yet. However, Roberts said there is a high chance that Betts will play with the Angels in Tuesday’s Series Finals.
