Basketball fans have been hungry for NBA action since the final in June, but many have enjoyed watching Eurobasket.
Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and several other NBA stars have competed in the tournament, and are not superior to Luka Doncic.
Donsic led Slovenia to the quarterfinals after beating Italy 84-77 in the first knockout round.
Reporter Mark Stein explained how the Los Angeles Lakers superstar represents “surprising” competition.
Stein was very impressed with the commitment from some of the world’s best players at Eurobasket.
And no one tried more for the tournament than Donsic, who brought a roster below Slovenia to the last eight.
Donsic suffered from “the fear of injury” and encouraged Lakers fans to tell him to sit in the race.
Thankfully, the 26-year-old has no advice and now has the opportunity to achieve something amazing in his country.
“It’s amazing how much they care about this. Luka Donsic has the weakest team around him he’s ever had at Slovenia and at the advanced level,” Stein said before Slovenia defeated Italy.
“He was injured. I’m sure Lakers fans were like, ‘I don’t want to rest in the summer and play.’ What happened was that Slovenia went 3-2 in group play.
“He doesn’t have (Vlatko) Cancar or Josh Nebo, so the two most skilled players from Slovenia, named Luka Doncic, can’t even play. Luka Doncic has a chance to win against Italy.
“Luca plays in this world. It’s all about pride and winning the Eurobasket in 2017 is undoubtedly the biggest sports achievement ever in Slovenia. They have Tour de France champions and Stanley Cup champions.
“But the meaning of that title is that Slovenia beat Serbia to win the Eurobasket in 2017, and I know that I can’t put my words in. I ask the Slovenians how meaningful it makes.
Slovenia already knows their quarterfinal opponent after beating Italy in the 16th round on Sunday.
They face Germany, a tournament favorite led by NBA players Franz Wagner and Dennis Schroeder.
