Is Gautam Gambhir disappointed with T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav’s poor performance in international cricket? The head coach of the Indian national cricket team has finally opened up on the matter and discussed the 35-year-old’s form.
Coach Gautam Gambhir frankly said that Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form is not a cause for concern for the Indian camp at the moment. This is because players who play ultra-aggressive cricket are bound to make mistakes.
Suryakumar Yadav leads India to win Asia Cup 2025
Recently, Suryakumar Yadav won his first major title by captaining the India T20I and leading his team to victory in the Asia Cup 2025 held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and humiliated the Pakistan national cricket team for the third time in a row to claim the Asia Cup trophy, but they are yet to receive the trophy as ACC’s ‘thief’ Mohsin Naqvi stole the trophy and ran away.
Although India managed to win the tournament overall, they faced severe criticism due to captain Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form. The right-handed batsman has scored 7*, 47*, 0, 5, 12, 1 in all matches of Asia Cup 2025.
Although many called for his removal, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took no action and retained him as leader for the subsequent tour of Australia.
To be honest, Surya’s batting form doesn’t matter to me – Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir said about Suryakumar Yadav that he could easily avoid criticism by playing slow knocks, but he won’t do that as he continues to play ultra-aggressive cricket and is bound to fail.
“Honestly, Surya’s batting form doesn’t concern me because we are practicing a hyper-aggressive template in the dressing room. If you accept this philosophy, failures are inevitable. It would be easy for Surya to score 40 runs in 30 balls and avoid criticism, but we collectively decided that it is acceptable to fail in pursuit of this approach,” Gambhir said in a conversation with Geostar.
“Right now, Abhishek Sharma is in good form and has maintained his form throughout the Asia Cup. Once Surya finds his rhythm, he will take on the responsibility accordingly. In T20 cricket, we are more focused on the brand of cricket we want to play rather than individual runs. Our attacking style may lead to more failures for our batsmen, but in the end it is the impact that is more important than just the runs,” he added.
Surya is a great human being and good people make good leaders – Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir further said that Suryakumar Yadav is a good person, which made him a good leader and created a great atmosphere in the team.
“Surya is a great human being and good people make good leaders. He speaks highly of me but my role is only to advise him fairly based on my reading of the match. At the end of the day, this is his team. His free-spirited personality is completely in line with the essence of T20 cricket, which is freedom and expression,” Gautam Gambhir said.
“Your personality off the field is reflected on the field and in the dressing room, and Surya has maintained this atmosphere admirably over the past year and a half. From our first conversation, we agreed that we are not afraid of losing. I am not looking to be the most successful manager. I want our team to be the most fearless,” he added.
