The San Francisco Giants sent shockwaves into the baseball world just before the weekend series finale with the Los Angeles .

The Giants have acquired All-Star slugger Rafael Dever from the Boston Red Sox.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan shared the news via X.

The San Francisco Giants are buying All-star slugger Rafael Dever from the Boston Red Sox, sources have confirmed to ESPN. There will be no more. Boston has won RHP Jordan Hicks and others. It was the news at first @byrobertMurray.

-Jeff Passan (@jeffpapassan) June 15th, 2025

Devers is heading to the Bay Area in exchange for Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs and Jose Bello.

The MLB’s trade deadline is still just over a month, but we’ve wasted time strengthening the Giants, especially their roster. Just before Sunday’s matchup with the , the Giants had a 41-30 record, just 1.0 from the National League West Lead.

As for the , they’re sitting at the top with a 42-29 record for the time being.

This certainly throws a little wrench at the ‘ chance to get to the top at the NL West. Not only is the race tight, but the are exhausted from injuries and if they stay on this course they could abdicate.

There was a notable tension brewing between the Red Sox and the shelter throughout the majority of the season. After Boston signed Alex Bregman in the offseason, the dynamics began to change.

Initially, Devers revealed that he is not open to becoming a full-time designated batsman. He later softened his stance and spent most of the season there. However, in early May he drew another line and informed the team that he was not interested in playing one base.

This situation added a layer of uncertainty to Boston’s Devers’ future, and made me wonder how long the current arrangement would last.

Now, when we sit in mid-June, we feel they have an opportunity to advocate for the West, so it’s clear that the Giants are all in this season. In the season, Devers cut .271/.400/.494 and 73 hits with .894 OPS and 14 home runs, 57 RBIs and 73 hits with 330 plate appearances.
