The PBM Ducati team confirmed that Glen Irwin is scheduled to undergo surgery on the sacrum after actually crashing on the Snetterton BSB.
Irwin’s high side exit was taken to the hospital at 9 turns 9 during the final BSB free practice session at Snetterton on Saturday morning, following an initial medical check at Circuit Medical Center.
At Norwich’s hospital, it was discovered that Irwin had a fractured sacrum. It is a triangular bone at the base of the spine between the two hip bones in the pelvis.
In a video posted to social media on Saturday evening, the Northern Ireland rider confirmed that he had “destroyed” the sacrum, but at that point he could avoid surgery.
Now, as the PBM team revealed in a statement posted on social media, it is clear that Irwin will need surgery.
“After a long discussion with his medical team, Glenn (Irwin) is scheduled to undergo surgery in the sacrum (pelvic area) this Thursday morning,” reads the PBM team’s statement.
“We understand the serious nature of this injury and our sincere thoughts and greatest wishes are in Glen during this difficult time.
“Following the procedure, we will focus on his recovery with an intensive rehabilitation plan. Until it progresses, we cannot predict his recovery and the timeline for his return to the Hager PBM Ducati team and the UK’s Superbike Championship.
“Glenn knows he’ll be overlooked greatly from the BSB grid. We’re really grateful for the overwhelming support and kind message we’ve received.”
The statement adds that the team is looking for a “good” alternative to Irwin.
“The understanding from sponsors and series organizers during this difficult time has also been most appreciated, and the team is working hard to find the right substitute rider with the aim of getting back on track at Knock Hill,” the statement reads.
