Steve Kerr’s contract with Warriors will expire after the 2025-26 season. The franchise has yet to begin an expanded discussion with the championship-winning coach.
Carr’s potential departure would mean Stephen Curry has only one year left on his contract. This scenario effectively ends the dynasty that began in 2015, continuing to have Draymond Green still pinned the roster.
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy recently provided an update on sensitive situations. He expressed his desire to retain Carr while respecting autonomy over his coach’s future decisions.
The Warriors executive highlighted the handoff approach during his podcast appearance with Tim Kawakami. Dunleavy wants Kerr to make decisions that feel right for both parties.
“On a personal level, Steve is such a great coach for our team, so I want Steve to lock in and see what that’s certainty,” explained Dunleavy.
“But with Steve, everything he accomplished, like he got it at his age. I’m not going to push him into anything.”
Dunleavy trusts Carr’s judgment about the timing of a potential departure. “You’ll also be doing it based on the organization as long as he has time to leave,” he added.
The Warriors continue to build around an aging roster where Curry, Green and Jimmy Butler serve as cornerstones. This decision shows our commitment to maximizing the remaining years of the Championship Core.
Golden State’s approach suggests they are moving ahead of young star Jonathan Kuminga, who entered free agency this offseason. The franchise prioritized veteran leadership over youth development.
Their veteran-heavy roster proved that it still competes at the highest level. The Warriors reached the second round of the playoffs before Stephen Curry’s injury ended their championship pursuit.
Next season potentially represents the last realistic title opportunity for this core group. The Warriors are chasing their fifth championship since 2015, winning titles under Kerr’s leadership in 2015, 2018, 2018 and 2022.
“Essentially, I feel like I can coach here as long as he wants. We’ll just solve the details of the contract and everything we go,” concluded Dunleavy.
The uncertainty surrounding Kerr’s future adds another layer of urgency to Golden State’s championship aspirations. It remains to be seen whether this season marks the end of the era.
