Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga still do not agree to a new deal
Both parties are still in contract negotiations, so deals with the 2025-26 NBA season have not yet been realized a few weeks ahead.
In the contract situation, there were rumours of continued trade between the Warriors and the Sacramento Kings.
The King shows interest in adding Kuminga to their team, but the obstacles remain.
One of the rumored deals is the Warriors who send Kuminga to the King and return the Malik Monks with a sign and trade.
Cuminga would be perfect for Kings Zach Lavigne and Domanta Sabonis, but the Warriors will get another scorer in the backcourt.
According to Athletic’s Sam Amic, the Warriors and Kings have resumed trade talks centered around Kuminga, but Monk’s deal remains a hold-up.
“Some obstacles remain in the trade, most notably the Warriors’ interest in the monks appears to be very calm.
“His contract is a major issue because he has a 2027-28 player option worth $21.5 million that doesn’t fit the Warriors’ future flexibility plan.
“There are concerns about his team as well. If they took him there, team sources said it’s likely that Golden State is trying to trade him elsewhere.
“But the problem with that path is that it’s not clear whether it’s always possible anytime soon.”
Cuminga will need to make a $7.9 million Warriors qualifying offer next season until October 1st. This will allow him to become an unlimited free agent next summer, but due to the accompanying non-trade clauses, he can keep him in Golden State in the near future.
However, if Cuminga does not receive the qualifying offer, he will be able to accept the more profitable but limited deals the Warriors presented him during the offseason.
Another scenario is a sign-and-trade deal involving King, but given the Warriors reportedly don’t want to take on a Monk contract, this option seems unlikely to be how difficult it is to re-rout him.
The Warriors star has expressed his hopes that Kuminga will return, so it will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds.
