John Jones may not be afraid of Tom Aspinel, but he knows how dangerous Britt is.
It’s been 18 months since Aspinall won the UFC interim heavyweight title with Sergei Pavlovich’s 69-second knockout. Since then, fight fans have been slowly filling up to see him spread with heavyweight King John Jones. Unfortunately, a year and a half later, we are no closer to seeing that fight than we are now.
Much of that responsibility rests at Jones’ feet. At Jones’ feet, he is repeatedly accused of fear of hurting his own legacy as an inclusive martial arts goat.
However, not everyone is afraid of “bones” fighting aspinel.
In a recent interview with Comeon Sports, two-time Jon Jones opponent, Alexander Gustafsson, proposed his views on the ongoing story of the former light heavyweight title holder scaring Aspinall.
“Is John Jones scared of Tom Aspinel? He doesn’t think everyone is scared, but he certainly knows Tom Aspinel is extremely dangerous,” Gustafson said. “He’s a young man with a lot of tools. He’s a strong guy and now he has a lot of drives. He has a lot of motivation.”
Despite an endless amount of delay and Jones insisting on preparing for at least six months or more, UFC CEO Dana White has promised to have a legendary fight by the end of 2025.
“It’s a great battle to watch, and it’s hard to predict such a battle,” Guss Safson continued. “You have a guy with all the tools and fighting IQs just like everyone else, and you have a young guy with a very strong and very good all-around fighter. It’s very difficult to predict who will win or who will lose, but that’s a battle that I won’t miss.
“The Mauler” believes that John Jones might stick to long enough to become the longest heavyweight champion.
Jones recently made the headline just behind Cain Velázquez, becoming the second-longest dominant heavyweight champion in UFC history. Gustafsson believes that in about 100 days after overtaking that record, Jones will be able to see him hanging from the belt in “bone.”
“Can John Jones retire after becoming the longest-serving heavyweight champion? That won’t surprise me,” Gustafson added.
