Tommy Edman took a break on Saturday, and the painted the pencil as their first base hand at Hyson Kim. Kim won four Gold Globe Awards for second and shortstop during his time with the Korean baseball organization.
Edman spent three weeks on the injured list with a sprain in his right ankle and returned to the lineup on May 18th. With his ankles well recovered, the team plans to frequently put Edman in the outfield.
This opens the door for Kim to play second more often. This is his best position. Kim has hit .383 on two home runs, with 12 runs hit and .968 OPS in 81 at-bats this season. Utility Man also has seven stolen bases.
The initially called Kim Up as a temporary replacement for Edman when they landed in Illinois. However, the 26-year-old’s breakout performance left the with no choice but to keep him on the big league team.
“I think Heisen has acquired the opportunity and I don’t want to lose him Mojo and hope he’s a good at-bat for six days,” Roberts said earlier this month. “So I think he has the opportunity to get a consistent look. I’ll go from there.”
Kim has started 24 games for the this season.
Before Edman’s ankle recovered fully, the played Kim both infield and outfield to make the rookie more playing time. Many fans have expressed their desire to see Kim more often in the lineup, and it appears to be the case as the season progresses.
