Holga Rune moved to the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at Indian Wells, California on Tuesday.
No. 12 Seed’s Rune played the attacker through his encounter with Tsitsipas, finishing a seven-match winning streak in Greece, reaching the ninth Master 1000 quarterfinals.
Rune delivered a shot from the tournament and took a breakpoint in the second set when he launched Ark’s “Tween” from behind the baseline, sending the ball to the opposite baseline where the extended twitz pass could not be obtained.
“I was very committed to my game plan, but mentally it was very good,” Rune said. “I think that made the difference. How did you get to compose it? Stef is back to form, so I think it’s fair to say. It was a cool fight.”
Rune will then face Japanese qualifiers Watanabe Yoshiumi Geely 7-6 (4), 6-1, who reached his first Masters 1000 quarterfinals at 6-1 on Tuesday.
In the evening session, Danil Medvedev beat local Hopetomy Paul 6-4, 6-0 in a late match after several rains throughout the day.
Medvedev only needed 12 minutes to charge for the opening four games and recovered from a short dip during the first set of the roller coaster.
A double break in the second set brought the No. 5 seed to the victory, giving him the momentum he needed to book a quarter-final match against the Arthur Phils.
