The best day behind former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovsky?
After suffering a back-to-back loss for the first time in his career, “The Great” returns to octagonal night this Saturday night with the opportunity to regain his featherweight title. Getting in his way will streaking Brazilian standout Diego Lopez.
The two 145’ers headed out UFC 314 on April 12th, with the promotion returning to the Kaseya Center in Miami.
Volkanovsky suffered a particularly cruel pair of knockouts in his last two outings against Ilia Topria and Islamic Makhachev.
To rest and recover from the last year, “Great” is sure he can resume his run on the division. However, not everyone is sure that Volkanovski can turn the clock back. In a recent episode of the One On One podcast with Laura Sanko, the former fighter became analyst Din Thomas, suggesting that the former Champ’s legendary durability may not be what it was before.
“You know, you beat Aldo and defeat Max. He was great,” Thomas said. “After his run and then two knocks outs in a row, I don’t know if it still exists for him. I don’t think it will exist anymore.”
Will Alexander Volkanovski dodge his father’s time a little more at UFC 314?
Whether or not you agree to Thomas’ take, there is no denying that father’s time will eventually catch up with all the fighters. Now 36 years old, can an Australian, violating the laws of nature, take another featherweight throne?
Or is it a new era at 145?
