Kevin de Bruin’s imminent departure from Manchester City clouded Etihad, bringing new speculation about his next destination.
The Belgian maestro confirmed earlier this month that he would leave the club at the end of the season at the end of his contract, closing the curtains in a glittering decade in Manchester.
Kevin De Bruin refuses to rule out travel to another Premier League club
What surprised many people was DeBruin’s recent approval that he had not ruled out continuing his Premier League career.
The 33-year-old discussed his future and suggested he was open to any offer that coincided with his persuasive sports vision.
He admitted that he is no longer in his prime, but he still believes he can compete at the highest level.
The comments sparked speculation that Premier League teams could seriously push forward to land one of the league’s modern greats.
Speaking to Fjortoft, De Bruyne said:
“There’s always a challenge. You know. You don’t know what will happen next season. Please come and convince me that they have a great sports project. You can make a decision.
“I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t know. I didn’t have a long decision to leave. In the world of soccer, I don’t make anything in a week. I’ve never met my family since the decision. I have to talk to them.
De Bruin’s influence in the city was monumental. Signed in 2015 with the club record fee of the time, he evolved into the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s side. With six Premier League titles, multiple domestic trophies and a historic Champions League victory in 2023, his Trophy Huar speaks for itself. Along the way, he earned countless assists, goals and unforgettable performances.
This season, despite missing out on some time due to a hamstring injury, De Bruyne is still on stream when he was called. In 33 appearances in all competitions, he tallied five goals and eight assists. This includes outstanding performances in their recent five-two league wins over Crystal Palace.
Liverpool’s de Bruyne
The midfield maestro has previously supported Liverpool and has acknowledged growing up idolizing Michael Owen, and hopes to play for them one day.
An old footage of 11-year-old De Bruyne while at Genk stated in an interview:
“My favorite club is Liverpool, and my favorite player is Michael Owen, and I’d like to play there one day.”
While overseas movements remain on the table, De Bruin has not ruled out the possibility of a surprising turnaround with his career path.
Whether he remains in England or seeks new challenges elsewhere, Manchester City is preparing for the departure of a generation of talent.
