  • Jasprit Bumrah deserves captain, but selector… -Ravichandran Ashwin

Former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjlekal expressed his surprise at Jasplit Bumra, who has not been considered for Indian Test Captain before the England series. According to the media, Shubman Gill is a strong candidate with support from the BCCI following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket.

After India was defeated in the Border and Gabascal Series, cricket experts supported Bumura as the successor to Test cricket Rohit Sharma. Bumura created a compelling case to take over the captain. India has yet to announce a new captain in the five-match Test series against England, which is scheduled to begin next month.

“I’m shocked at what we’re seeing…”

Sanjay Manjrekar questioned why Jasprit Bumrah was appointed vice captain of the Australian series. He called out the AJIT Agarkar-led selection panel for contradictions.

“I was shocked to see other options other than Bumura as a test captain! Are you worried about his injury? Then choose your vice captain carefully,” Manjilekal wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Bumura has led the Indian test team on multiple occasions, including the border and Gabaskar trophies. He led his team to his only victory on the disappointing tour when Rohit Sharma was not available in the opening test in Perth in November 2024.

Bumrah was handed the reins again in the fifth test held in Sydney in January 2025 after Sharma opted out due to poor form. Before that, Bumra had captained India in 2022 in Tests with England at Edbaston.

Jasprit Bumrah deserves captain, but selector… -Ravichandran Ashwin

Speaking on YouTube show Ash Ki Baat, Ravichandran Ashwin said Jasprit Bumrah is likely the most experienced member of England’s upcoming tour. He believes Bumra is a candidate for captain, but added that the final decision will depend on the selector.

“Bumra is clearly one of the captain’s options. I think he deserves captain, but the selector will make decisions based on his physical abilities,” Ashwin said on his YouTube show “Ash Ki Baat.”

They always want extra from Jaspri’s Bumra – Sunil Gabascar

Sunil Gavaskar dismissed concerns about Jasprit Bumrah’s workload in an interview with Sports today. Gavaskar pointed out, as captain, that Bumrah would be better off managing his workloads.

“Jasplit Bumrah for me… If you appoint someone else, they’re your number one bowler who can always get a wicket, so they’ll always want something extra from Bumrah.

“But the captain himself, Bumrah, “Look, this is the time to take a break. Yes, I have a wicket before, but my body says I need a break,” he explained his reason.

India will begin the New World Test Championship (2025-27) cycle with a five-match series against England, which began in Leeds on June 20th.
