Former Indian cricketer Piyush Chawla defended his former teammate Virat Kohli’s T20 approach amid continuing debate over his strike rate. The previous leg spinner said Kohli is consistently delivering to his team, adding that the right-handed batter has a decent strike rate in the IPL.
Virat is preparing for his 18th IPL season. He played more than 250 matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He retired from International T20 Cricket following India’s World Cup victory last year. Some speculate about how his thinking will affect his performance, as his T20 focuses solely on IPL.
Piyush Chawla supports Virat Kohli amid criticism of his strike rate
Speaking to Annie, Piyush Chaura said Virat Kohli would intervene in royal challenger Bengaluru at a critical moment. Chawla said Kohli has been consistently performing for his team, but his strike rate is frequently discussed.
“He’s always been delivered for his team. If you look at the numbers, the numbers speak for themselves.
Kohli secured his second orange cap in the 2024 IPL season. The right-handed batter has 741 runs, with an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69, including half-century and 1st century for five. The Delhi-born batsman scored 218 runs in India’s winning Champions Trophy campaign.

Chawla also said that every team needs a batsman who can lock in the innings, and Kohli is effectively meeting that responsibility. He also dismissed unnecessary criticism over Kohli’s strike rate.
“As a team administrator, I need one player who wants him to hold one end, so if someone like Virat is working for the team, that’s also a strike rate of 130, which is really good.
