Former champion Iga Swieczk defeated Caroline Garcia for the second time in many tournaments that won 6-2, 7-5 on Friday at the Miami Open.
Her victory set up a third-round clash with Belgian Elise Mertens, the 6-4, 6-1 winner of the American Payton Stearns.
Sweet beat Garcia on a straight set at the same stage for the Indian Wells. Her title defense then ended in the BNP Paribas Open semi-finals last week.
Swiatek faced a much more determined opponent this time.
She ran through the first two games of the match without dropping points, leaning on the serve to secure the first set in 29 minutes and then consolidated another service break for a 4-0 lead.
However, Poland’s second seed faced much more resistance in the front and back sets.
Swiatek overcame a 3-1 deficit and saved the set points while serving 5-4 down, winning the match in the final three games.
Former US Open Champion Emma Raducanu also defeated American Emma Navarro 7-6 (6), 2-6, 7-6 (3).
Among the other women moving forward on Friday were the 10th species, Paula Badosa and No. 15, Karolina Mciba.
