Veteran opener Rohit Sharma said he continues to be committed to leading the Mumbai Indians (MI) to their sixth IPL title despite not being the team’s captain. The 37-year-old, who was removed from captain last season, said his main goal is to help the team secure a victory in IPL 2025.
The Mumbai Indians were unable to secure an IPL title from 2008 to 2012. However, they emerged as the most successful team between 2013 and 2020. They won five championships in seven seasons and claimed the trophy each year. This dominant era could be praised for Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
Rohit Sharma – MI’s most successful captain in IPL
Rohit Sharma took over captaincy from Ricky Ponting midway through the 2013 season. He led the team to their first trophy as a skipper in his debut season. MI became a team despite consistent struggles in the season opener. In particular, they haven’t won their first match in the last 13 seasons.
The franchise has played a key role in shaping cricket superstars such as Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav. Their powerful scouting system was a key factor behind their success. Another important aspect of the Mumbai team’s domination is a relaxed and supportive environment.
A lot has changed – Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma was replaced by Hardik Pandya as captain prior to IPL 2024. The decision sparked anger among fans, with Mi performing poorly that season.
In an interview with the Mumbai Indians, Rohit revealed the changes within the team over the years. He added that his attitude that never changes and that never changes is part of the franchise.
“It obviously changed a lot. I was obviously hitting the middle order, so I was open batting now. I was the captain. I wasn’t the captain.
“What I want to do for this team hasn’t changed. It’s about getting out there and winning the game, that’s what you get the trophy.

Five-time champion MI experienced a four-wicket defeat against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2025 opener. MI was able to post 155 runs, and Rohit Sharma went out unfortunate and was fired for a four-ball duck.
He didn’t get the field in two innings as he was replaced by debutant Vignes Puthar under the impact player rule. The wrist spinner on the left arm was impressed by the 32 number. MI lost its first match for the 13th year in a row.
