World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has stepped out of the Billie Jean King Cup qualifying tournament in her home country of Poland, she said on social media on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old said he will need more time to focus on himself in Radom from April 10-12 and will not play for the national team against Switzerland and Ukraine.
“I know this isn’t the information that fans, especially Polish, wanted, but that’s the right decision for me for now,” she said.
“Now it’s time to focus on myself and my training and balance out more. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the girls and the whole team.”
The five-time Grand Slam champion was recently eliminated from the Miami Open in the quarterfinals by 19-year-old Alexandra Yere of the Philippines.
Swiatek was playing the match with additional security after being verbally abused by the audience during a previous practice session.
