Tom Aspinall has released his first statement since the UFC 321 debacle.
On Saturday, Aspinall made his first successful defense of the undisputed title when he faced Cyril Gane in the main event of UFC 321. Unfortunately, the bout ended in bad fashion, with Aspinall sustaining a serious eye injury in the first round that prevented him from continuing, resulting in a no-contest.
Aspinall headed to the hospital immediately after UFC 321 and posted a short video on his Instagram page on Sunday detailing his backstage moments and some of his hospital journey.
“That’s what all the training was for,” Aspinall said while speaking with Daniel Cormier backstage. “What the hell is he doing?”
“The left shot was really deep,” Cormier said.
“Both were bad,” Aspinall replied. “He was warned twice before that. He was warned twice before that. **** has done it again!”
The video then shifts to Aspinall in the hospital, with his father talking about the incident.
“Mike Bisping, he lost his eye,” Aspinall’s father says. “It’s a scary thing to think about as a parent. I understand how things are these days with people saying what they want, but if it’s your son who could lose an eye and his health could be compromised and they have children to look after, something needs to be done about it.”
In the end, nothing was done about it. Gane was not penalized and the bout was ruled a no-contest, and UFC CEO Dana White said after the event that the promotion plans to rebook the fight in the near future.
