James Bowles will remain as principal of the foreseeable future Formula 1 Williams team after agreeing to a new several-year contract with the team.
The announcement comes amid Williams’ best start to the Formula 1 season since 2016, with Alex Albon and the new Recruit Carlos Sign scoring 55 points, bringing the team to fifth in constructor standings.
Vowles joined Williams in January 2023 following a lengthy stint as Mercedes’ strategic head, during which he helped lead German outfits to the seven-driver title and eight-constructor championship.
Since replacing Jost Capito at the helm, Vowles has taken on a bottom overhaul from the top of team operations.
Under his leadership, Williams managed to attract four-time Grand Prix winner Sainz, securing a new title sponsor for software giant Atlassian.
In a statement, Williams said the renewal of the Vowles contract “provides stable leadership to take the next step to win the championship again.”
“We are excited that James has signed a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing and has promised his future to complete his mission to be with us.”
“He brought experience, energy and strategic leadership to the challenge of bringing Williams back to the top step on the podium. We’re not there yet, but we can feel the momentum we’re building on the glove and we’re excited about what’s ahead.”
Vowles said the New Deal will give him and Williams the opportunity to “go for glory” in the coming years.
Williams is investing a significant amount of resources in developing new challengers as the 2026 season will see regulations on both chassis and engines being revamped at the same time.
“We are delighted to sign a new deal with Atlassian Williams Racing, which feels like home from the moment we walk down the door,” he said. “This iconic team has already given me some incredible memories, and we are all united in our ambitions to build our legacy and win the World Championships again.
“We’ve been focusing on foundation revisions over the past two years, and now we have a platform to gain glory in the coming years.”
